Why would my photocard driver’s license need to be renewed?

Until you are 70, your photocard, a pink card with the driver’s picture on the front, needs to be renewed every ten years. Driving without a valid license is against the law, and if you are caught:

If you are stopped by the police, you could face a £1,000 fine. You might have trouble getting auto insurance. Driving internationally may involve breaching local laws. Some car rental companies could decline to give you a car.

Every ten years, licenses must be updated; this ensures that you have the most recent security measures in place to guard against fraud. Additionally, this will deter unsafe and ineligible drivers from operating a vehicle and help prevent driving license fraud road.

How can I tell whether my photocard driver’s license has run out of time?

Check your photocard’s expiration date. There are numbers in each section of your card:

The numbers 1-3 stand for your given name, family name, and birthdate. The expiration date is shown in Section 4b of the card.
